NIESTI by Simonynsky Sechzehn Mwangivic

“NIESTI!” The roar made by the Titans in every game they played in the KHU National League this past season. With there dedication, diligence, enthusiasm and hard work they have pulled themselves up from a disappointing last position last season to end third this season! What is it that made them come up this far? Well, some may say, it sheer luck, others their hard work. Their respect to God, dedication in training and the inception of the new players in the club has seen the Kimathi university Hockey team rise to be what it is this season. Lewi, Misheck, Justus Mesa, Isaac Mbugua, Chris Mchwanju and Joseph Ng’ang’a joining the team to go ranks higher to be one of the best in the National League.

Having performed poorly last season, Simon Peter “SP”, The Titans coach, scouted for more players to add onto the team to strengthen its ranks! Having enforced the team it was a matter of training and team spirit which they proved they could do perfectly! Having played nine games they had a 4-2-3 record! They won four games, drawn two and lost thrice! “It was a good season but I know we would have done better”, states SP. “The boys were resilient, hardworking and disciplined. I know we were the best team but it is not always as we hope for.”. It was rather not hard to notice that SP was impressed by the team and is looking forward to the next season to lift the National League trophy. “I believe deep down in my heart that with much support from the administration and hard training, we will clinch the top spot next season. All we need to do is to do our part and trust God for the rest.

Fredrick Nyaga, the team’s skipper was impressed with leading his team to the third position. “Comparing with last season I’ll not hide my joy for the fact that we did well this season. Being our second season and performing that well against well experienced teams in the league, I would say it shows that we are going to be top dogs in the coming seasons”. Fredrick also stated that he was not impressed by the games they lost especially to Parklands Sports Club who are the clubs biggest rivals. When asked to comment about the teams performance, Martin Waweru, the clubs Team Manager said that he was impressed by their performance but stated that he expected more! “I know we would have done better, but half a loaf is better than none”. “My greatest disappointment is that we have no sponsors as yet and we would like to have one. The school administration has really done well in supporting us and I know they wouldn’t mind a helping hand”, continues Martin. He also stated that hockey in Kenya has not really got the promotion and sponsorship that it really deserves and he prays that the corporate world will come up and sponsor the sport. “The country is so much concentrated on Athletics, Soccer, Rugby and have forgotten hockey in which it fields good teams and clubs.”

Being the only hockey club in Nyeri region, the club has really represented the region well. “It is a young team and we promise that we shall be one of the biggest hockey clubs in Kenya.”, says Brian Ahenda the ace midfielder. “I am confident that we shall be in the top ranks with teams such as Kenya Police and Nairobi Simba”. “I would like to play in the Premier league against these teams while in this club and hope that we will next season.”, continues Ahenda.

“We have been receiving numerous fans especially on facebook. Our new website also receive numerous visits.”, comments Simon Mwangi, the site admin and also who is the clubs forward. We urge our fans to continue to support us and join our facebook page and our site.”. The club is currently training and having friendlies in preparation for oncoming university and club tourneys as they also wait for the next season. We hope with their continual dedication and training they will become what they all hope for.

Poetic Li-Sense- By Harrie G Mkala

Harrie G Makala

For poetry is not jst playing with words,

but putting the words into a play,
superbly chereographed and edited,
providing an aura of a movie from the warner bros
soothing and exciting all at a beat
to make u mumble on the popcorns
and almost feed on ur nose !
to let u get lost in the world of emotions
and chamelionise ur feelings!

Poetry is supposed to charm u,
Make u feel like a believer on his way to paradise,
like an exhausted olympic marathoner on his
way to winning the gold
the satisfaction of a teacher
when his young pupil gets a pretty tough quizz ryt
The warming smile of a burdened ,
destitute, African woman .
Thats poetry!

poetry touches areas uv never bn touched b4!
works with magic craizier than of
the healing water.
so put ur life into the play yrt bwt nw,
and sing along to the swyt melodies ,
put ur voice into life and enjoy the art of speaking,
put ur feet onto the new way
and ul see me wen u get their
Yours Truly,
Poetry!

DEVELOPMENT OF A SIXTH SENSE

'SixthSense' is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

We've evolved over millions of years to sense the world around us. When we encounter something, someone or some place, we use our five natural senses to perceive information about it; that information helps us make decisions and chose the right actions to take. But arguably the most useful information that can help us make the right decision is not naturally perceivable with our five senses, namely the data, information and knowledge that mankind has accumulated about everything and which is increasingly all available online. Although the miniaturization of computing devices allows us to carry computers in our pockets, keeping us continually connected to the digital world, there is no link between our digital devices and our interactions with the physical world. Information is confined traditionally on paper or digitally on a screen. SixthSense bridges this gap, bringing intangible, digital information out into the tangible world, and allowing us to interact with this information via natural hand gestures. ‘SixthSense’ frees information from its confines by seamlessly integrating it with reality, and thus making the entire world your computer.

The SixthSense prototype is comprised of a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera. The hardware components are coupled in a pendant like mobile wearable device. Both the projector and the camera are connected to the mobile computing device in the user’s pocket. The projector projects visual information enabling surfaces, walls and physical objects around us to be used as interfaces; while the camera recognizes and tracks user's hand gestures and physical objects using computer-vision based techniques. The software program processes the video stream data captured by the camera and tracks the locations of the colored markers (visual tracking fiducials) at the tip of the user’s fingers using simple computer-vision techniques. The movements and arrangements of these fiducials are interpreted into gestures that act as interaction instructions for the projected application interfaces. The maximum number of tracked fingers is only constrained by the number of unique fiducials, thus SixthSense also supports multi-touch and multi-user interaction.

The SixthSense prototype implements several applications that demonstrate the usefulness, viability and flexibility of the system. The map application lets the user navigate a map displayed on a nearby surface using hand gestures, similar to gestures supported by Multi-Touch based systems, letting the user zoom in, zoom out or pan using intuitive hand movements. The drawing application lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of the user’s index finger. SixthSense also recognizes user’s freehand gestures (postures). For example, the SixthSense system implements a gestural camera that takes photos of the scene the user is looking at by detecting the ‘framing’ gesture. The user can stop by any surface or wall and flick through the photos he/she has taken. SixthSense also lets the user draw icons or symbols in the air using the movement of the index finger and recognizes those symbols as interaction instructions. For example, drawing a magnifying glass symbol takes the user to the map application or drawing an ‘@’ symbol lets the user check his mail. The SixthSense system also augments physical objects the user is interacting with by projecting more information about these objects projected on them. For example, a newspaper can show live video news or dynamic information can be provided on a regular piece of paper. The gesture of drawing a circle on the user’s wrist projects an analog watch.

The current prototype system costs approximate $350 to build. Instructions on how to make your own prototype device can be found here (coming soon).

G4S 80M Heist

A private security company,G4S-Kenya  has reported the loss of Sh 80 million in transit from a bank. The company however, quickly exonerated itself from blame saying the heist was carried out by "fraudsters" masquerading as its employees.
The police who said the vehicle used, branded in the company's official colours and logo, did not belong to G4S.
The gang that posed as the company's crew wore clothes similar to G4S uniform and were escorted by others carrying rifles and dressed in administration police uniform.
Besides launching a hunt for the gang members, police were looking for a man in whose name the vehicle is registered.
The vehicle was abandoned on Matumbatu Road in the city's Upper Hill area, several minutes after the money was stolen from Co-operative Bank at the city centre, at around 2 pm.
A private security guard at a nearby residence saw the vehicle carrying the loot stop outside his gate.
