“NIESTI!” The roar made by the Titans in every game they played in the KHU National League this past season. With there dedication, diligence, enthusiasm and hard work they have pulled themselves up from a disappointing last position last season to end third this season! What is it that made them come up this far? Well, some may say, it sheer luck, others their hard work. Their respect to God, dedication in training and the inception of the new players in the club has seen the Kimathi university Hockey team rise to be what it is this season. Lewi, Misheck, Justus Mesa, Isaac Mbugua, Chris Mchwanju and Joseph Ng’ang’a joining the team to go ranks higher to be one of the best in the National League.
Having performed poorly last season, Simon Peter “SP”, The Titans coach, scouted for more players to add onto the team to strengthen its ranks! Having enforced the team it was a matter of training and team spirit which they proved they could do perfectly! Having played nine games they had a 4-2-3 record! They won four games, drawn two and lost thrice! “It was a good season but I know we would have done better”, states SP. “The boys were resilient, hardworking and disciplined. I know we were the best team but it is not always as we hope for.”. It was rather not hard to notice that SP was impressed by the team and is looking forward to the next season to lift the National League trophy. “I believe deep down in my heart that with much support from the administration and hard training, we will clinch the top spot next season. All we need to do is to do our part and trust God for the rest.
Fredrick Nyaga, the team’s skipper was impressed with leading his team to the third position. “Comparing with last season I’ll not hide my joy for the fact that we did well this season. Being our second season and performing that well against well experienced teams in the league, I would say it shows that we are going to be top dogs in the coming seasons”. Fredrick also stated that he was not impressed by the games they lost especially to Parklands Sports Club who are the clubs biggest rivals. When asked to comment about the teams performance, Martin Waweru, the clubs Team Manager said that he was impressed by their performance but stated that he expected more! “I know we would have done better, but half a loaf is better than none”. “My greatest disappointment is that we have no sponsors as yet and we would like to have one. The school administration has really done well in supporting us and I know they wouldn’t mind a helping hand”, continues Martin. He also stated that hockey in Kenya has not really got the promotion and sponsorship that it really deserves and he prays that the corporate world will come up and sponsor the sport. “The country is so much concentrated on Athletics, Soccer, Rugby and have forgotten hockey in which it fields good teams and clubs.”
Being the only hockey club in Nyeri region, the club has really represented the region well. “It is a young team and we promise that we shall be one of the biggest hockey clubs in Kenya .”, says Brian Ahenda the ace midfielder. “I am confident that we shall be in the top ranks with teams such as Kenya Police and Nairobi Simba”. “I would like to play in the Premier league against these teams while in this club and hope that we will next season.”, continues Ahenda.
“We have been receiving numerous fans especially on facebook. Our new website also receive numerous visits.”, comments Simon Mwangi, the site admin and also who is the clubs forward. We urge our fans to continue to support us and join our facebook page and our site.”. The club is currently training and having friendlies in preparation for oncoming university and club tourneys as they also wait for the next season. We hope with their continual dedication and training they will become what they all hope for.
