Located within Nyeri municipality, on the slopes of Mount Kenya lies the expansive Kimathi University college of technology. From Nyeri town it is approximately six kilometers along the Nyeri – Nyahururu highway. The university boasts of; the serene environment having an excellent view of the snowcapped Mount Kenya, a more than 700 hectares piece of land consisting of 350 acres of natural forest, a dairy farm, 300 acres of open space for expansion and a more than 350 acres of commercial coffee. Driven by a passion of having their very own middle level college to equip the region’s youth with entrepreneurial , business and technical expertise, the community started Kimathi Institute of Technology as a community college in 1972 admitting its first batch of students in 1978.
After being elevated to the status of University College, as a constituent college of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology (J.K.U.A.T.) in 2007, Kimathi University has been cited as the fastest growing university college and this has been illustrated by it becoming the first among thirteen other constituent colleges of the country’s seven public universities to be ISO certified.
Over the recent years Kimathi University has undertaken rather bold steps in the development of infrastructure and technological inputs as seen by the construction of the ultramodern Resource Centre, a one of a kind machine shop in East and Central Africa, a highly mechanized mechanical workshop not to mention the up to date Electrical and Electronic Engineering laboratory despite the low funding that institutions of higher learning receive.
The courses offered at Kimathi University are tailor made to enable the country realize its vision 2030 dream. By providing economically viable range of degree programs alongside Certificate and Diploma courses in Information and Communication Technology, Commerce, Actuarial science and in Engineering disciplines, the institution has demonstrated its commitment to producing competent graduates to the job market.
